From the highlands to the breakfast tables of Edinburgh and beyond, Scots are stirring up millions of bowls of porridge every year. But what’s the real secret to making it just right, no matter how you cook it? According to Aldi’s resident oat expert, there’s one simple rule that guarantees success every time.

Whether you prefer to simmer your oats gently on the hob or pop them in the microwave, Aldi Scotland’s Group Buying Director, Graham Nicolson, says the key lies in the ratio — not the method.

The magic number? One part oats to two parts liquid. This golden balance, he says, is the foundation for creating the perfect creamy and satisfying porridge, every single time.

That liquid can be whatever you fancy — plain water for the traditionalists, milk for a richer flavour, or a plant-based alternative for those who prefer it lighter.

“It’s not the cooking method that matters,” says Graham, “It’s the maths. Get the ratio right, and you’ll nail it every time.

“Using the golden ratio of two parts liquid to one-part oats simply bring the porridge to the boil, simmer for 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, and you’ve got yourself the ultimate hearty bowl, every time.”

Aside from being comforting and delicious, porridge remains one of the most affordable and nourishing breakfasts around — providing warmth, energy, and satisfaction from just a single bag of oats.

It’s also one of Aldi Scotland’s biggest sellers. According to the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket, as named by Which?, shoppers bought 375,000 packets of porridge oats last year alone — the equivalent of more than nine million bowls served up across Scottish households.

To celebrate National Porridge Day, Aldi Scotland has released a series of both sweet and savoury recipes for oat lovers to try at home — including Scottish blackberry oat muffins, overnight oats, and fruit oatcakes inspired by traditional flavours.

Graham added: “Porridge continues to be a staple in Scottish households – it’s affordable, versatile and good for you.

“And over the years we’ve seen our customers getting creative with their toppings, whether it’s plain, sweet, or savoury porridge remains one of the most reliable breakfasts out there.

“With so many bowls being enjoyed every year, it’s clear Scots’ love of porridge is stronger than ever.”

So, whether you’re a fan of milk or water, fruit or salt, one thing is certain — the perfect bowl of porridge all comes down to the ratio. The rest is just a matter of stirring.
