Glasgow’s beloved family-run bakery, McGhee’s, has unveiled its frightfully delicious Halloween empire biscuits, now hitting supermarket shelves across Scotland just in time for spooky season.
This limited-edition treat brings together two layers of rich, buttery shortcrust pastry with raspberry conserve, finished with smooth fondant icing and decorated with playful chocolate skeleton and cobweb motifs. Vegetarian-friendly and baked to McGhee’s traditional recipe, they’re a perfect indulgence for sharing—or scaring—throughout October.
Now available from selected Scotmid, Sainsbury’s, Iceland, Spar, Morrisons, One-O-One Convenience, and independent retailers, McGhee’s Halloween empires have become a firm seasonal favourite. Since their introduction in 2021, demand has nearly doubled each year as more stockists come on board, highlighting their growing popularity among customers.
This year, the fan-favourite biscuit is receiving a seasonal makeover with refreshed packaging and a bold Halloween-inspired design.
The launch comes off the back of a remarkable year for McGhee’s, which recently earned the title of Scotland’s second most chosen food and drink brand according to Worldpanel by Numerator’s Scotland Brand Footprint 2025 report.
Operating from its Port Dundas bakery, McGhee’s is nearing its 90th anniversary—a milestone underscoring its long-standing presence in Scotland’s baking tradition. Empire biscuits have remained one of its signature bakes since the company’s early days and continue to enjoy renewed popularity as demand surges.
Speaking about the Halloween twist on one of the family-owned bakery’s staples, Aisling McGhee, Commercial Director, said: “Our Halloween empires have become a bit of a tradition for families across Scotland, and it’s something we really look forward to baking each year. There’s something so special about seeing them pop up in shops across the country and knowing they’ll be part of people’s celebrations at home.
“Empire biscuits have always been part of what we do, but their popularity has really taken off in recent years. When we first moved to Port Dundas in 2005 we were only producing around 2,000 a day, and there has been an extraordinary scale-up in production capacity since then.
“The team has had a lot of fun bringing this year’s design to life: the cobwebs and skeletons are a brilliant finishing touch, and it’s amazing to see how much excitement they create every autumn. It’s become one of those products that everyone in the bakery takes real pride in, and we love seeing how quickly they fly off the shelves.”
McGhee’s Halloween empire biscuits are now available in selected Scotmid, Iceland, Spar, Morrisons (Glasgow area), One-O-One Convenience, Sainsbury’s, and independent shops throughout Scotland.
