A new pub from The Oarsman and Gabriel Machin
Henley’s Market Place will welcome a brand new chapter for one of its oldest pubs this spring, as The Three Tuns reopens under new ownership on Tuesday 27th May. Acquired by Nigel Sutcliffe, owner of The Oarsman in Marlow and Barry Wagner, owner of the renowned butchers next door Gabriel Machin, the opening brings to life a dream that’s been 25 years in the making.
Nigel and Barry first joked about taking over the pub next door decades ago—chatting over the butcher’s counter at Gabriel Machin. Over the years, the idea never quite went away. Now, they’ve turned that shared vision into reality with the re-launch of The Three Tuns: a welcoming local rooted in quality produce, hospitality and a deep affection for the community.
The revived pub pairs warm, relaxed service with a produce-led menu built around premium cuts and ingredients sourced directly from Gabriel Machin, the celebrated butcher just next door. Backed by an experienced team and a clear passion for honest cooking, the opening represents a fresh start for this historic space—with an all-new food and drink offering from top to bottom.
The menu is full of flavour-packed highlights, starting with bar bites like Lamb Croquettes, Grilled Sausages with N’Duja & Shallots, and Cantabrian Anchovies on Toast. Starters include the likes of Devilled Kidneys on Toast, Clams à la Plancha, and Machin’s Oak Smoked Salmon with Potato Salad.
Main dishes range from Confit Lamb Breast with Carrot & Black Garlic to a standout Baked Hake with Brown Shrimp & Spring Greens, and a comforting Confit Chicken ‘Chasseur’ Pie for Two.
For those after something from the grill, the Butcher’s Board showcases a rotating selection of cuts from Gabriel Machin including Lamb Cutlets, Bavette Steak Frites, and a generous 28oz Côte du Boeuf, all served with fries, rocket and Béarnaise. Celebratory cuts such as the Shoulder of Lamb or Wing Rib of Beef will also be available for the table.
Located in the courtyard of the pub, The Boat Shed offers a more casual offshoot, serving up a compact burger-focused menu available to eat in or take away. Guests can choose from the Classic Smashed Cheeseburger, a Beyond Meat Vegan Burger, and optional kimchi for an extra hit of heat—all ideal for al fresco dining in the relaxed courtyard setting.
The Three Tuns will be run by the team behind The Oarsman, with Executive Chef Scott Smith overseeing the kitchen and General Manager Patrycja Gajda leading front of house.
