Humble Grape, the independent wine bar and importer renowned for its focus on sustainable, small-batch producers, has announced the launch of its seventh venue: Humble Grape, Bow Lane.

Situated beneath the famous Bow Bells, the new location occupies the 11th-century crypt of St Mary-le-Bow in Cheapside (EC2). The venue spans three vaulted bays, retaining its original Norman arches and stone vaulting, offering visitors an atmosphere shaped by a thousand years of history. The church above, rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London, has long represented endurance and community. Now, the crypt below is being reimagined as a calm, intimate space for exceptional wine, thoughtful food and meaningful social experiences. Seating 60 guests inside and a further 40 on the terrace, Humble Grape Bow Lane provides a peaceful haven just steps from the bustle of Cheapside — perfect for after-work drinks, private celebrations or simply enjoying a quiet glass in a remarkable setting.

“Opening our doors within such an extraordinary setting is both humbling and inspiring.” says founder James Dawson. “St Mary-le-Bow has stood for centuries as a place of gathering and community – values that resonate deeply with Humble Grape. We want Bow Lane to be more than a wine bar; it’s a place where people can connect, discover wines made with integrity, and feel part of something timeless.”

Founded in 2009, Humble Grape has developed from a single bar into a collection of popular neighbourhood venues across London. Its philosophy remains unchanged: fight the good wine fight. No industrial production, no unnecessary additives, no pretence. The company directly imports bottles from twenty-six countries and collaborates with independent winemakers committed to organic, biodynamic and sustainable practices. Just as importantly, the team strives to keep the experience approachable, replacing jargon and complexity with relaxed guidance, simple tasting descriptions and staff who genuinely want to help guests discover wines they enjoy.

The Bow Lane bar will operate as a wine bar, restaurant and retail wine shop, offering a curated selection of more than 500 bottles paired with European-inspired small plates. Diners can expect Humble Grape favourites such as baked Camembert, artisan cheese and charcuterie, seasonal dishes and expertly prepared steaks, all crafted to complement the evolving wine list.

With six thriving venues already in London, the opening of this remarkable crypt location represents both a nod to history and a bold move forward. The space encourages guests to slow down, savour the moment and connect — all within surroundings that have held centuries of stories. Humble Grape Bow Lane is scheduled to open in November 2025.
