A contemporary Korean BBQ destination opening this November
This November, Covent Garden will welcome a new addition to its culinary scene as SOOM opens its doors at 99 St Martin’s Lane. The new restaurant marks the latest venture from the team behind 3KOBROS, the popular Korean restaurant in Canary Wharf.
Korean cuisine continues to capture Londoners’ imaginations, celebrated for its bold flavours, social dining rituals, and artful balance of tradition and innovation. SOOM channels this spirit through a refined Korean BBQ experience that blends conviviality with calm sophistication.
At its essence, SOOM is a celebration of the Korean BBQ tradition – a communal experience where diners gather around the grill to cook and enjoy a selection of premium meats and seasonal vegetables. Beyond the BBQ, the menu will feature both classic and modern Korean dishes, with inclusive options for vegetarian, vegan, and halal diners.
To conclude the meal, guests can indulge in a concise dessert selection that bridges heritage and modernity, accompanied by a thoughtfully curated drinks list. Offerings include traditional soju, Korean-inspired cocktails, speciality teas, and an array of refreshing alcohol-free options.
Design plays a central role in SOOM’s concept. Conceived as a tranquil retreat from the bustle of the city, the interior combines traditional Korean aesthetics with modern sensibilities. Each stone table conceals a sleek electric BBQ grill, ensuring guests can enjoy an immersive dining experience in understated elegance.
At the heart of the restaurant stands the SOOM feature table – a circular, twelve-seat centrepiece designed to foster connection. Above, a striking ceiling installation inspired by Hanok architecture weaves soft wooden layers and curved forms to evoke movement, warmth, and natural light. Adjacent to this space, the bar showcases artisanal touches including Goryeo celadon vases, a softly illuminated hanji-wrapped counter, and a mesmerising mother-of-pearl mural portraying a serene Korean landscape.
Toward the rear of the main dining area, guests will find a symbolic Jing – a two-metre-wide circular gong traditionally used in Korean ceremonies – displayed against a gently lit backdrop. The Jing is sounded during moments of joy, unity, and celebration, while a nearby ‘Circle of Light’ glows quietly, symbolising balance and shared energy.
The middle section of the restaurant flows through sculpted arches and gentle curves, creating semi-private alcoves that retain a sense of openness. Finally, SOOM’s private dining room offers a space of intimacy and warmth, featuring ink-wash inspired landscape panels and a traditional Korean mother-of-pearl folding screen, showcased beautifully in the basement dining hall.
A soft launch will precede the official November opening, offering guests 25% off food during the preview period.
