In celebration of National Fish & Chip Day on 6th June 2025, WDW Bingo has delved into the cost of one of Britain’s favourite staple meals across the UK – and the results vary massively depending on where you live.

Using a combination of Just Eat and desk research, the WDW Bingo team analysed thousands of menus for traditional fish and chip shops in over 50 locations across the UK. The data reveals where your money goes furthest for a portion of fish and chips.

The 10 Cheapest Locations for Fish & Chips in the UK

Manchester tops the list as the most budget-friendly spot for a portion of fish and chips, averaging just £8.94Walsall (£9.17) and Dundee (£9.47) round out the top three, coming in second and third place, respectively.

Other affordable spots include Derby (£9.70)Bradford (£9.87) and Stoke-on-Trent (£9.88), all offering classic chippy fare for under a tenner. Scotland’s second city, Glasgow, makes the list at number 10 with an average price of £10.37.

The 10 Most Expensive Locations for Fish & Chips in the UK

At the other end of the scale, Exeter tops the list as the priciest city to enjoy fish and chips, with an average cost of £16.55 – nearly double the price in Manchester. London follows closely behind at £16.29, proving that the capital’s living costs extend to its takeaways.

The South West is clearly a luxury hot spot for chip shops, with Torquay (£15.60) and Bristol (£13.99) also featuring high on the list. Other premium-priced locations include Ipswich (£13.86)Bournemouth and Southend-on-Sea (both £13.43), and Cambridge (£13.37)Belfast rounds out the top ten with an average cost of £13.21.

“These findings highlight the impact of regional pricing on everyday favourites. Whether you’re in a seaside town or a city centre, the humble fish supper isn’t immune to postcode pricing,” added Harrison.

The Average Cost of Fish and Chips in Scottish Cities

Scotland proves to be a fairly economical destination for fish and chip lovers, with all major cities offering a portion for under £11. Dundee leads the pack as the most affordable, with an average cost of just £9.47, making it not only the cheapest in Scotland but also the third most affordable location in the UK overall.

Close behind are Glasgow (£10.37) and Aberdeen (£10.67), both offering reasonable prices for the traditional dish. The capital, Edinburgh, is the most expensive among the Scottish cities studied, with an average cost of £10.93 – still well below the national highs seen in southern England.

The Average Cost of Fish and Chips in Welsh Cities

Cardiff leads as the most affordable city in Wales with an average cost of £10.42, placing it comfortably below the UK’s national average.

Swansea follows at £11.06, while Newport is the priciest among the three, with an average of £12.17 – still more affordable than many locations in southern England.
